    Artist Statement

Through the use of Newport cigarette boxes, I am acting as a historical revisionist. For the past six years I have been collecting Newport boxes, and integrating them in my work. For me the Newport cigarette box is a symbol of the continued exploitation of a community that has struggled through social, economic, and psychological limitations imposed by slavery, segregation, racism, and cultural domination. When the empty boxes are deconstructed and reconstructed via the Islamic pattern and designs, they take on new meaning, representing not addiction and exploitation, but order and harmony.
