    Thesis Abstract

Buildings are related to political, cultural, and economic ideas in societies. However, many buildings lose their value and function over time because of urban structural changes. The Sewoon is a megastructure project constructed in 1967 and was an important modernist experiment in Seoul. It was an iconic building of Korean economic development and political dictatorship. Over the course of the past forty-five years, Seoul’s urban structure and political systems have changed rapidly, leaving the Sewoon’s programs and building envelope in decline.

Though the Sewoon is not yet fifty years old, it has historical value and should be preserved. It is an important monument of modern Korean history and architecture. Also, the Sewoon is an important structure for the urban fabric. Therefore, I will explore and assess possibilities for a re-proposed megastructure for the purpose of both conservation and improvement of the current business and community environment.
