    Northern Expansion

Canada’s Far North is currently being reshaped and redefined by the growing pressures of industrial mining operations. These increased pressures have led to declining social, cultural and economic conditions of the North’s Aboriginal populations. This thesis looks to create dynamic sites of exchange, where aboriginal peoples can begin to leverage the activity brought on by industrial mining operations, bridging the disconnect between these two Northern actors. This thesis looks at how the land bridges along the North’s winter ice roads can serve as sites of exchange, where Aboriginal populations can interact, profit, and provide for a new North.

    Thesis Abstract

Canada’s Far North is currently being reshaped and redefined by the growing pressures of industrial mining operations. These increased pressures have led to declining social, cultural and economic conditions of the North’s Aboriginal populations. This thesis looks to create dynamic sites of exchange, where aboriginal peoples can begin to leverage the activity brought on by industrial mining operations, bridging the disconnect between these two Northern actors. This thesis looks at how the land bridges along the North’s winter ice roads can serve as sites of exchange, where Aboriginal populations can interact, profit, and provide for a new North.
