    Thesis Abstract

As we experience the transition from print to digital, I’ve been asking myself – what has been lost in the process? We all love the inviting physical properties and emotional resonance of printed books; can those same qualities be translated into a digital book form, or is this shift an opportunity to redefine what a book can be?

The discussions and projects to follow are attempts to explore what possibilities are afforded us by this new medium, and how we can use those opportunities to create new and meaningful experiences around the books we love.

Some of the particular issues addressed in my work include:
When does interactive content overpower the book form?
What qualities of printed books are worth retaining?
What new functions could a book cover serve?
How can we make the digital experience more personal?
