Language barriers often stand in the way of connecting with relatives and understanding people from cultures that are not our own, but when language immersion isn’t a practical option, retaining or relearning a language requires a sizeable time commitment. Even for people who have a high level of interest, it can be difficult to find the time to practice. My thesis explores behavior change and persuasive technology in the context of language retention. Through a series of probes and prototypes, tested with participants who have prior knowledge of a foreign language, I’m designing a system that will help language (re)learners engage with the language on a daily basis and gradually rebuild their study habits.
